- the first "Barbie" doll
Bild-Lilli was indended as a novelty figure for fans of the Bild-Lilli comic strip character in the Bild newspaper. A limited number of accessories were made available. Each Bild-Lilli came packaged in a clear plastic tube, complete with stand and with her own small version of the Bild newspaper. Use the following image to print your own copy of Lilli's newspaper.

The newspaper is printed on both sides of a single piece newsprint paper and then folded and placed in the dolls hand or sometimes under the arm of the doll or in the large pocket of a jacket.
A swing for the small 7.5 inch Bild-Lilli could be bought separately, to suspend from a car rear view mirror.
Lilli dolls were supported on a stand by means of a single metal pin that could be inserted through a hole bottom of the foot, this allowed for a range of poses, as the other leg was free.

Lilli the fashion doll, precursor to Barbie began her existence in a cartoon drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for German Tabloid Die Bild-Zeitung, founded 1952
She was an instant hit with readers so Bild first issued her as a plastic figurine dashboard ornament, perched on a wire in a hitchhiking pose, secured by a suction cup.
Later, in 1955 she was re-created as the Bild-Lilli doll, eventually becoming the inspiration for Mattel's Barbie Doll when the future creator of Barbie brought a Lilli doll back from a trip to Europe and unofficially gave it to her designers to use as a model for the first Barbie (Mattel eventually bought the rights).
